knurl callout
i have seen knurls called out in many ways yet can't find a "standard" on how to do it. i know that if you have your tpi, helix angle and od called out, you will more than likely get what you want. is there a "correct" or "standard" way to do this? possibly and ansi or asme standard? i am asking for straight, helix and diamond knurls. thanks.
antmecheng
have you checked machinery handbook?
chris
solidworks 06 5.1/pdmworks 06
autocad 06
i have checked the machinery's hanbook (ed. 25) and there is a lot in regards to knurl tools and standard/ansi requirements for the tools. however, the handbook doesn't have much in regards to how to callout a knurl on a drawing properly or "correctly". like i said, i know i can get enough information on the drawing to get what i want, but i wanted the correct or standard way to do it.
thanks,
antmecheng
standard call-out is fine, ex.- for diametral>  pitch knurling "96 dp 30* diamond knurl dia.xx min. after knurling" or for circular pitch knurling> "30 teeth per 25.4 30* diamond knurl dia.xx min. after knurling"
circular pitch knurling is based on the number of teeth per
25.4 mm of circumference* and is for use on surfaces above 25.4 mm diameter.
*normal teeth per 25.4 mm are measured perpendicular to the teeth.
dizmanfff"> ... it's ok ... you are allowed to use the word "inch" in this forum.
assuming you are us based (and we all know what assuming does)
96 dp diamond knurl all around.
got me what i wanted the last time i used it.  it was in a note with cross reference to the appropriate diameter on the part.
at the time i looked it up somewhere but can't recall where.
asme y14.5 1.8.17 reads:
鈥淜nurling is specified in terms of type, pitch and diameter before and after knurling.  where control is not required, the diameter after knurling is omitted.  where only a portion of a feature requires knurling, axial dimensioning is provided.  see fig. 1-46. 鈥?br />
fig1-46 has a side view of a shaft dia19.7 with a portion indicated for knurling.  the actual callout is 鈥淧itch 0.8 raised diamond knurl鈥?br />
it does reference ansi/asme b94.6 at 1.8.17.2 for info on inch knurling.
back in the uk though i seem to recall drawings that just had a callout to the appropriate area with 鈥淐oarse knurl鈥?or 鈥淔ine knurl鈥?
