Line profile should be Curve Profile

<< Scott Worden  --  09/01/04  12:20:01>>
I believe the 2 types of profile dimensions are Surface Profile and Curve Profile.  For some reason, we are using Line Profile instead of Curve Profile.  This should be changed.

There are at least 4 instances of this:  Dimension toolbar tool tip, Insert | Dimension | Profile | (Line...), (Line) Profile dialog, Edit Window dimension text.

I guess I was expecting ISO and ASME to use the mathematical or geometrical definition of a line and not the literal definition.
In math:
Line = a straight curve, a series of point extending infinitely in one direction
Curve = a connected set of points, a nonstraight line.
- thus, in math, a line is a very specific curve.  Whereas curves are a superset that include lines.  So to mathematicians, profile of a line is straightness but straightness cannot be applied to a curve.
Unfortunately, dictionaries define a line as being either straight or curved and apparently ASME and ISO politicians chose dictionaries over mathematics.  Go figure.

The ISO standard of 1983 which I have officially calls them "rofile of any line" and "rofile of any surface" in its tables, chapters, and table of contents.
ASME Y14.5 1994 section 6.5.2 calls this (a) "rofile of a Surface" and (b) "rofile of a Line".  Everywhere else I see a figure with this or the icon, it calls it the same thing.
I highly recommend that we leave this as it is.

I believe Y14.5 has a table with the symbols and names.  Whatever is in the table is what we should use.  Dave has the office copy so I can't look it up.  This should be double checked with the ISO standard.

Wade,
I believe Surface Profile and Line Profile are correct.  Surfaces can be curved or flat and imply a 3D profile; lines can be curved or straight and imply a 2D profile.  I have not seen anything in the Y14.5 standard that talks about this.  I believe we use this terminology simply to distinguish 2D versus 3D.

I think that this has been debated several times but I don't recall the final decision for naming this.
