a325 bolts: x or n??
hi all,
yes, i know the difference between a325n bolts and a325x bolts.
(1) when comparing same diameter bolts, since the materials are the same, are they about the same price?
(2) why are a325n bolts typically specified when a325x bolts have higher capacities?
mike
more work to coordinate the location of the shear plane with the end of the threads....just extra time and labor and that equals money.
they are the same material, so they are the same price.
jae, you are right on target. often times i find out that the fabricators and erectors do not adhere to this requirement. either the fabricator does not send the proper bolts, or they send the correct bolts and they get mixed up in the field. i try to play it safe and assume that the threads are in the shear plane. of course i am stickler on certain connections and i make sure that proper bolts are used.
regards,
they aren't different bolts, as i understand it.  just different lengths of the same bolt that determine whether threads are in the shear plane.
