allowable stress range for steel angles in bending
aloha all,
please excuse the simple steel question; i've been doing mostly concrete for the past 15 years. anyway, can anyone tell me where i can find the allowable stress range for steel angles in bending in the aisc (green book or 13th ed/ 2005) manuals. i see that depending on the unbraced length, it's between 0.42 and 0.66fy for the more common shapes, but i can't find anything specific to angles.
thanks!
green book: p 5-309.
13th: section f10.
if you dont have the green book you can download it from the aisc website.
angles have their own specification.
go to the aisc web site.
in the first qtr of 1984 there are load tables for laterally unsupported angles for equal leg angles, and unequal leg angles with the long leg both in the horizontal and vertical positions. it starts on page 35.
in general,if you check the deflection and limit it to serviceability deflection criteria lateral buckling can be avoided. if you design only for stress the deflections will be large and twisting will occur.
check page 5-309 at the end of the green book. |
