asce simplified design wind pressure
ok, all this time my boss always tell to look at the wind speed and the category and get the max horizontal pressure under a and use that # to do my lateral analysis.
sure, i think the way he does it is conservative and it will work.  now i really want to learn on how to use it "correctly".  i really dont understand why there are zone b and a.  also why does roof angle affect zone c?  what happend if you just want to analyze a sound barrier wall?  what zone do i use?
never, but never question engineer's judgement
coengineer,
i assume that you are using asce 7.  there is a commentary at the end of the book.  also see the following link for a good publication by asce.  these two references should answer many of the questions that you may have.
sorry forgot to add the link:
why does the shape of a wing affect the amount of lift?  aerodynamics...
the shapes were tested in the lab and associated pressures measured.
as to the pitch of the roof angle affecting zone "c", it only stands to reason to me that the more surface area that is presented to the wind, the harder it is for the wind to get around surface "c".
the same alogic applies to the difference between surface "c' and "a" where the wind must shed across "a" from "c" to pass by = more pressure at "a".  samd applies for the difference between "b" and "d".  also gets into vortez shedding too.

there are also books by dr. s. k. ghosh, the seaoc design manuals, and textbooks like the wood text by breyer et. el. with commentary and examples.  and, of course, software which can be found with google.
