books on masonry design?
i would appreciate suggestions on your favorite books for masonry design.  it seems that i am seeing more and more masonry walls with nearly as much reinforcing as concrete walls.  i assume this is the result of "advances" in engineering, code changes (that ibc 2000 is a bear!) or is it that we engineers are getting too conservative?
assuming you're inquiring about concrete masonry units a good start would be visitng
an old text by james amrhein / masonry industry of california "masonry design manual"
and
reinforced masonry design
by robert r. schneider
this title ships for free on qualified orders! find out how.

reinforced masonry design - isbn: 0130117277 author: schneider, robert r. author: dickey, walter l. publisher: prentice hall
i use "reinforced masonry engineering handbook" by amrhein.  note that when the wall's height to thickness ratio is small enough (say, less than 12) empirical design methods usually allow walls to be unreinforced (at least where wind load controls).
