concrete column
i have a 16"x16"x12' concrete column with 4" masonry attached all around(24"x24" overall dimension).
when calculating the radius of gyration, aci states that it is permissible to use 0.3x the overall dimension in the direction stability is being considered.
the dimension of the concrete column is 16", however, the "overall dimension" of the column is 24". is the masonry included in the "overall dimension"? which dimension should be used to compute the slenderness?
my thought is that since the radius of gyration is a section property and is independent of the material, it should include the masonry.
any thoughts?
imho, the masonry should not be included when calculating the radius of gyration.
i might change my opinion if you are counting on the masonry to carry some of the load, but that opens up a whole other can of worms in regards to the design.
i would just be conservative and not include it.
i second broekie.
ignore the brick. |
