cooper loading on box culvert
i am designing my first box culvert for cooper e80 loading.  i'm not sure i understand the earth pressure loadings and the section/article 2.2.3c(2)of arema 2004 is confusing too.  can anyone help me out with some clarification?
thanks
check out chapter 16 (reinforced concrete box culverts) figure 16-1 it explains some of the load distribution.
best, tincan
the requirements are outlined in part 16 of chapter 8 of the arema manual.
i see those diagrams, but what if i have two or more tracks next to each other?  if i follow the 2:1 slope rule, the pressures would overlap and article 16.4.3b says not to increase the loads for multiple track loadings.  however, in article 2.2.3c(6)multiple track loading is considered.  sections 2.2.3c and 16.4.3 seem to contracdict one another in more than one way.  am i making this too complicated?
as a suggestion, run out the loadings for one track and for multiple tracks.  you should reach a point (depth) where the loads equal, same as for highways.  take the loading (max or average) that youre comfortable with.
?whats the depth of the rcb?
thanks for your reply "tincan"!
the bottom of rail of the dual track portion is around 4.5' to 5.5' above the top of the rcb.  another area has multiple tracks and will temporarily be 16'+/- above the top of the rcb.
take the worst case.  the rr's like overdesigned massive structures, it lessens maintenance and future problems. the last one i did for the bn was so over designed that it will be here at the second comming.
tincan.
