crane loads in staad pro
hi everyone
i am designing a structure for a fabrication shop on staad pro. this shop has to carry 02 no. cranes of 50 tons each. my queries are:
is it necessary to analyze the structure for moving loads (cranes load)?
if yes, how these loads can be applied on staad pro?
if no, what are the other methods to design and analyse the structure for moving loads?
thanking you people in advance for replying me soon.
regards

i feel it is important to analyze the structure with the cranes. two 50 ton cranes can add significant load to the columns.
aisc design guide 7 "industrial buildings, roofs to column anchorage" shows how to design for crane loads. part 2 is industrial buildings with cranes.
i didn't have much luck using the moving load criteria in staad. i determined the critical locations for the crane loads in designing the columns and runway girders and added in concentrated loads where the wheel loads were.
hi,
i feel also that it is important to analyze the structure with the cranes. with staad i didn't using staad to analyse moving loads case, but i use the bedas software wich is didicated for the dynamic analysis of structures under moving loads. in this case you input the true speeds of your loads and bedas gives you the dynamic response and the static one ( you can get also the daf ( dynamic amplification factor) value). this software can be downloaded from
use the moving load generator option under the automatic load definitons. for a free movie tutorial on how to do that, go to
in an industrial structure like this, one can often judge where to place the wheel loads to create the most adverse load effect based on the geometry of the structure and the crane.
you can also refer to examples given in "crane-supporting steel structures: design guide" available to download free from canadian institute of steel construction. |
