diagonal shear wall
with a wood roof diaphragm, how do i distribute lateral load to a combination of perpendicular and diagonal shear walls by simple span analysis? i assume it would be conservative to span the diaphragm from the perpendicular wall to the center of the diagonal wall.
i am not asking about a rigid diaphragm analysis here...i know how to do that.
for distribution, i would convert the diagonal wall into an equivalent perpendicular wall with the center of force of the diagonal wall at the center of the diagonal. that is pretty easy.
for laying out the nailing patterns for the diaphragm itself, it seems a little more tricky.

i tried to draw a diagonal wall inside the building above with shear walls on all exterior sides. i bet it won't come out right. if you connect the diaphram to the diag wall with the average force you come up with using an equivalent smaller perpendicular wall, some of the diaph to wall connection may be inadequate. i am thinking about toward the rear right side of the diagonal wall. i have to go, i will think about it. |
