evaluating cope w beams, channels
what is the step by step procedure for the proper evaluation of coped beams, channels etc. any recommended reference material such as design guides or textbooks that cover this area thoroughly? thanks in advance.
you have appendix b coped beams in manual of steel construction volume ii connections asd 9th ed / lrfs 1st ed.

there is a book written by james fisher called designing with steel joists, joist girders and steel deck.  this book has a step by step process for coping the ends of steel wf sections.... not sure about cahnnels.
there is a very good step by step procedure in the 13th ed manual.  i think it's in section 9, but i haven't looked at it in a while.
strleit,
you are right, it is in section 9.  the discussion is within the first few pages and i find it is much better than the 9th edition.  i also find the design examples cd that come with the manual do a fine job of working you through the checks.

jberg, lololol, would you mind if i keep your last post for the next time someone starts complaining that the 13th ed. manual stinks compared to the 9th ed.?!
271828,
sure you could, but i do feel that the 9th ed. used much simpler equations than the 13th, which made checks quick.  for me, that is just because i was so used to the 9th, like many other engineers.  i had to use the 13th for the pe exam earlier this year, so after many months of studying and use, it did get easier to use.
once you get used to the new way they organized the book, it makes sense, but it is difficult to get people to change.
