experience and opinions of single plate shear conn. of steel
i was wondering what other structural engineers view of single plate shear connections is and what issues have arisen in the field when these have been used? what are your added concerns and opinions? is this type of connection conservative enough for your comfort in design?
(see pp. 4-54 to 4-56 in the asd manual of steel construction 9th ed.)
what is your preferred connection for simple shear and why?
very good connection for simple or moment connected beam to take care of shear. sheat plate is economical and easy for shop and erection. i use it 75 % of all shear connections.
for larger reactions i am using double angles.
whymrg's response exactly like mine.
my $.02 again - i agree with whymrg and jae.
single plate shear connections are the most common connection type in my area (seattle, usa). the design is based on research by astaneh, richard, et al. background information can be found in the 1990 steel tips article on aisc's website at |
