furnace and seismic design
i am tasked to design a floor to support a 40'+ tall by 13'-6" diameter furnace inside of an existing building. the furnace will only be supported by a elevated concrete slab.   my question is in regards to the seismic design and code interpretation.  i am looking in asce 7-02 and am finding possibly 2 locations that this furnace may fall under in the code.  the first, is in section 9.6.3 (table 9.6.3.2 notes furnaces).  but, i still wander if this furnace could fall under section 9.14 for non-building structures, although table 9.14.3 does not mention anything about furnaces.
anybody have any advice?
i think 9.14 is meant for non-building structures not supported by buildings.  if the furnace is supported by the building, use the 9.6 section you mentioned.
we use non-building structure requirements for glass furnaces and the like.
what type of furnace do you have?
