heavy timber framing/details
i am working on a job that is in the design development stage.  the architect is kicking around using heavy timber framing for a gable roof.  the rest of the structure is steel column and beams, hollow core plank floors, steel joist and deck for the flat roof, and braced frames and shear walls for lateral support.
sizing members and structural analysis will not be a big problem.  the area where i need some guidance is in detailing the connections.
the timber beams will frame into each other at the peak (connection detail) and will bear on steel on the low end (detail).  the architect would like to use steel rod to tie the members together.  if anybody has any experience with detailing heavy timber, integrating timber into a steel job, or knows of books or other resources, please respond.   i am trying to stay ahead of the architect on this one because of the possible extra work.
also, is it come to leave the connections to the supplier?  provide loads at the joints and let the supplier provide details?

i'm afraid i'm not much help, but if csellc pokes his head in this thread, he'll have a weatlh of information for you.
my $0.02 - connections are the most important part, and you should pay particular attention to them.  you should be able to design them using nds and the connections to the steel with brackets/seats and thru-bolts.

that is where i was going to start.
my experience with heavy timber was designing h-frame transmission structures.  the connections were pretty straight forward, even for the truss connections.
