i 35w bridge progress update.
the replacement bridge on i35w in minneapolis is ahead of schedule. optomistic reports say it will be completed 3 months early (september 2008), while the contractor just says it is ahead of schedule.
if the bridge is completed 100 days early, the contractor will get an extra $200 million ($200,000/day times 100 days). the bonus was set a 1/2 of the estimated daily additional cummuting/transportation/access cost of $400,000 per day. the winning contractor had a bid with a guaranteed completion date (dec 25, 2008) at a higher price than the other 3 bidders. the bid price was $234 million, compared to the other bids of $177 to $215 million.
because of the site and proximity to bed rock, there were few unknowns for foundations and the colder than normal winter was not a problem for the foundations or the start of casting the precast elements adjacent to the bridge. - big chunks of concrete!!!!
it may be embarassing for the various state and local organizations involved in the infrastructure surrounding the bridge if the bridge is done and there are not the utilities completed, lights and access roads completed that are required to open the spans to traffic.

smart contractor... pour the resources into the job, keep it going 24/7 and reap the bonus. i'm impressed. a tip of my hat to the team involved, presuming they can pull it off...
