india apartment collapse kills 11
very sad. i was especially surprised by the line, "building collapses are common in bombay."

these are pretty old buildings, declared unsafe, but people are not willing to vacate. apparently, these people are quite poor and have no other place of shelter.
and such a loss of life is not given its due attention. this news goes into page 9 of national daily because these people are poor and no one bothers about them. sad but true.
ciao.

can anything be more surprising than this one?
the large cities of india - calcutta (now kolkata), mumbai, etc. are full of grand old structures that are either in disuse or are under sort of rent control where tenents are paying 1950 prices. owner will not maintain. in the disued buidlings, people move in and won't move out regardless of the soundness of the structure. actually, two buildings in mumbai have now collapsed this past week. it is sad - sad that grand old buildings have been permitted to decay. (and many of the buildigs are under government ownership/stewardship). as a result, the squatters or poor tenents suffer. big social problem.
