lateral torsional buckling of angles
i am curious as to what fellow engineers use as presumptions regarding lateral support of angles in bending. i am looking into aisc 13 chapter f, section 10.2 on lateral torsional buckling of angles.
specifically, i am looking at a continuous angle that spans between the ends of roof joists (@ 5' o.c.) where the facade back-up studs are directly attached to the angle. the deck would span parallel to the angle in this case but would be fastened to the angle with 2 sidelap fasteners per 36".
is the angle laterally supported by the deck?
do the sidelap fasteners provide enough resistance to consider the angle laterally braced?
am i missing something entirely on the lateral torsional buckling?

seems like you are well braced, but not continuously braced. i would use equation f10-5 which uses the principal axis. the 1st part of section 10 says to use the principal axis when not continuously braced except when the provision for bending about the geometric axis is permitted. however, i don't see this provision anywhere.
yes, i would say you are braced at the joists and the locations of the sidelap fasteners. |
