liquid sulfur pit design
does anyone know whether the use of "slagcement" (ground granulated blast furnace slag), would reduce the corrosive effect of molten sulfur on (sunken) concrete containment tank, or would have benefits with regard to cracking as a result of the temperature differential between molten sulfur, (300 degrees f.), and the soil surrounding the tank, (potentially freezing)? also, what does variable "z" represent in design of reinforced concrete? (something to do with re-bar spacing? should be limited to z=90?)

"ground granulated blast furnace slag" is a cement replacement and strength enhancer. use as a substitute for 15-20% of the cement in the mix design and get a denser finish product with a strength gain,(10-15%). i do not think molten sulfer has any corrosive effect on concrete, (acids with sulfer as a constituent have negative effects and can require type 5 cement or type 2 cement for moderate concentrations). the temperature differential may be moderated with "outsulation", insulation between the concrete and the soil. z is a parameter used for crack control, and i would increase rebar clear cover to 3" and keep clear spacing between sulfer face bars at 4" or less. if using z equal to 95 kips/inch or less, then the design is suitable for "severe exposure". |
