magnitude of design earthquake
do any of you know how to find the magnitude (richter or moment magnitude) of a design earthquake (say 10 in 50)? thanks a lot.
yes, if you need the design earthquake for a specific site, please check with your geotechnical engineer. if you don't have one, get one.
if you're only interested in teh probabilistic earthquake magnitude you can use the code for this. if you're in the us then ibc, if appropriate for your area, should give you the design spectrum you need.
if you have a probabilistic earthquake definition and are looking for a specific magnitude, good luck. the probabilistic method was developed to work around a very specific event. most relationships are region specific and depend on a number of factors. so once again, see your geotechincal engineer.
