modelling a pipe resting over soil
how should i model a pipe in staad-pro?
it is a 12" diameter pipe resting over soil.
it is a underground pipe with a concrete/bituminous pavement above it. i need to check the stresses in pipe due to moving wheel load.
also i would like to get suggestions for stress analysis.
how would be the stresses in pipe?
pipe is very long.....and i have a wheel laod of 75 kips.
modulus of subgrade reaction is....225.
the depth of fill being....2.5'.
any help please??
what you are describing is what is called a culvert. consult a culvert design manual.
okay....but how would you model it in staad?
noopur,
an underground pipe resting on soil is a "beam-on-elastic-foundation". i have never used staad for that type of design, but you could check the "automatic spring support generator for foundations" in the staas's manual.
there are other issues you will need to resolve before using staad:
1) the value of modulus of subgrade vertical reaction
2) the portion of the wheel load that affect the pipe
to find about these issues, follow cage's advice and consult a culvert or pipe design manual.
regards
cage & dlew,
thanks a lot for your suggestions!
