mohr's circle for biaxial stress!!!
mohr's circle is used to predict one form of failure for many automotive components. one of the options in most fea packages is to shade the elements according to their maximum shear stress. the red elements indicate that the skilled analyst needs to change something or other to make them green.
having worked for 3 years in a large building that was designed using plastic analysis, i'd say it works, tho whether it leads to the best design is another question.
so what was your question, really?

thanks for the reply!!i wondered whether one really ever applies these concepts.it was nice to know that you and many others could have apllied these practically too!!could you tell me why you opted for plastic analysis than conventional elastic analysis for the your building.would'nt elastic analysis with redistribution apropos to the code(me in india) could serve the purpose.how much time it took you to carry out the analysis?i believe it would have been only via hand calculations?please if possible let me have some idea.

mohr circles are used by geotechnical engineers to analyze the results of unconfined compression and triaxial shear tests on soil samples.  the mohr circle give them the soil angle of internal friction and the cohesion.
they are also used by structural engineers to analyze the results of load tests on structures using sets of directional stress gauges.   the mohr circles give, in this case, the direction and magnitude of the principal stresses.
possibly there are more instances where mohr circles are used in engineering, but i know (or re  
i urge everyone to have full faith in what in ug studies as the same theories are held in practice. for example, mohr's circle is very widely used in design of gravity dams- earth or concrete or rcc. its a very trusted tool of dam and embankment designers.
