moscow subway tunnel collapses
this report does not give much detail. i am glad tot hear no causalities. i wonder if lack of maintenance has anything to do with this.
"moscow subway chief dmitry gayev said the accident apparently was caused by workers who were erecting a street billboard in the area and damaged piles supporting the tunnel's roof..."- doesn't sound like maintenance problems.
jstephen,
he also said the sign damaged the piles supporting the roof. most tunnel roofs are arched and do not require piles to support them.
it must be one hell of a sign that could cause damage to tunnel that is so deep! i am sure more facts will come later that will shed light on what really happened.
regards,
lutfi
ththink of about that subway tunnel collapse that took place several years ago, i believe in washington dc. at that time rain or fire hydrant water had collected behind sheething piles in an excavation and that collapsed causing massive damage to the subway.
doing a search, i found the following:
builder held in metro accident
by nabi abdullaev and anastasiya lebedev
staff writers
"moscow prosecutors on monday detained the head of the company whose workmen drove concrete posts into a metro tunnel and hit a packed train.
"all 500 passengers on the train were safely evacuated after the accident on the dark green line in northern moscow on sunday afternoon."
the article continues, but you have to pay an archive subscription to pull the rest of it up. |
