notching in sawn lumber members
the nds limits the depth of the notch one can take on the tension face of a 2x member (nds 2005, section 4.4.3). the contractor has notched the ceiling joists more than the allowed.
the direction i would like to take to solve the issue is to strap accross the the opening with a cs16. is this an adequate approach or is there a more typical way to reinforce the joist?
check out our whitepaper library.
are these ceiling joists also floor joists or the bottom chord of roof trusses? or are they "non-structural" ceiling joists?

they're "non-structural" ceiling joists.
thanks in advance.
the strap may work, depending on any possible vertical load these joists may see due to attic storage. is this a possibility? are all the joists notched in the same location?

do a backward calc. with the amount of notch you have, lets say that notch is correct, what size of member would that be? if that
all the joists are notched at the same location, 6" from the end support. the loads on the ceiling joists are minimal, 5psf live load and 5 psf dead load and no point loads.
thanks for all your responses. it's much appreciated. |
