penetrations in concrete walls and other rc structures
i am being tasked with designing a reinforced concrete wall. a round pipe of diameter 36" will pass through this wall. my boss (pe) told me (graduated in 2003 with bs) to add #5's at 45 degree angles abou the perimeter of the 36" opening. i asked other engineers in the office and they told me it was a rule of thumb.
i can find no code justification or requirement or anything else for reinforcing around openings in walls. i'm not asking for anyone to do my work, just to point me in the right direction for the right code, i.e., aci, crsi, etc.

you typically add "corner" reinforcing bars to minimize potential shrinkage cracks.
i"ve practicing for about 20 years....have always added them.......the few times i didn't.... the contrctors added them anyway because they always have.....
that's correct, there is no specific code reference that mandates this, and i might add, that you will find, and learn, that there are many other things in engineering that are like this...not specifically called out for in a code or spec, but still good solid engineering practice none the less.
not to mention, it's relatively cheap (cost of a few #5 bars) compared to someone getting upset should some cracks begin to form. |
