sheared edges vs. cut edges of structural steel.
re: asd table j3.5, minimum edge distances.
this table has listed "sheared edges" and "gas-cut or saw-cut edges"
i assume a sheared is a standard factory edge?
what are the differences? and what is standard for cut plate?
most cut plates are sheared, most probably. however, they may be gas cut as well if they are above certain thickness.
sheared edge is not a mill or rolled edge!
i hope this helps

shearing is a fabrication process that causes cold working right at the sheared edge. flame cutting or saw cutting both induce heat and, to some degree, anneal the area of the cut. shearing is practical for thicknesses up to about 5/8", but after that, shearing is difficult (can be done if you have powerful enough shear....but most shops don't). after that, flame cutting is more practical, whether gas (oxy-acetylene) or plasma arc. |
