w-shape beam to hss column moment connection
does anyone have a reference for a w-shape beam to hss column moment connection? aisc said that they had one, but it is out of print now. it is included in the new steel manual but that's not availble until february, which is too far away. please advise. thanks.
i have a book from aisc calltes hollow structural sections connections manual.  if it's out of print maybe you can get it on ebay.
i have had to use this kind of moment connection before.  in the above book they do have a couple of ways of doing it.  one of the ways, and the way that i used is to weld tee stubs to the tube column and then to bolt the stems to the beam flange.  they also have end plate moment connections, and directly welded connections.  i favored the tee stub because i thought it was more forgiving of column placement tollerances, but i'm sure that the end plate can work fine too.
try to get the above book, it goes through solved examples of various ways to connect wf beams to tube columns for a moment connection.  maybe a local college has a copy in their library.
run the wide flange over the beam, put stiffener plates in your wide flange to align with the walls of the hss column below, field weld the tube to the bottom of the wide flange with whatever you need (full pen never hurts).
i agree with arneg, but you may be able to have a cap plate on the column with bolts to the bottom of the beam rather than a costly field weld
ever look at the descon connection programs.
some ideas there.
