weak axis bending for a channel lintel
are there any additional manuals available that provide a better analysis of weak axis bending for steel channels? asd does not address the bending stress for this shape. i have a 12' opening and am trying to decide if an i beam may be needed instead.
at the risk of oversimplifying this, i would use wsd method, 0.66 x fy. no point in exact accuracy for this. deflection will probably control anyway.
asd equation f1-1 perhaps?
i really do not like to use angles and channels (or any singly symmetrical members) for flexure.
aisc allows the use of 0.75fy for weak axis bending stress for i, h shaped sections, rectangular plates and solid bars. see equation f2-1. this is due to the fact that these members tend to fail in yield and not buckling.
however, to be on the conservative side, i would use equation f2-2 (0.6fy) for a channel.
