welding stainless steel
i have a job where stainless steel plates will be welded to hss, w shapes, and c shapes.
what electrodes should i be using?  my general steel notes say use e70, but i usually never have stainless on the job.  what should i put in my general note for weldining stainless to regular?

309l alloy welding rod
thank you.
can that 309l electrode also be used for welding stainless to stainless?  or is that 308?
yes 308 would be used to weld ss to ss
one would use 309 to weld ss to carbon steel
308 is the consumable generally used to weld type 304 and similar grades such as 301 and 302.  there are many other types of ss which require different consumables, so, please don't think 308 is a 'catchall'.  fyi, for most applications, 309 would be an acceptable choice for welding type 304, but, more costly due to the higher alloy content.
thanks again.
one other question - i have a general steel note that says w shapes to be astm a992.  what should i include for structural stainless?  "all stainless steels to be 300 series"?

try the company "stainless structurals" (
for smaller depth stainless members the sizes can be hot rolled (usually from india).  for larger sizes, they will be plates welded together.
