wood truss unprotected from wheather
i inspected a house which had a roof with wood trusses discolored (grey color) and even with some mud on them. it is obvious that they were stored outside with no protection from sun and rain.
can anybody tell me if they are acceptable or what would be the main concerns on such trusses, or what kind of remedy are possible?
thanks.
the main concern is the status of the truss plate connectors. exposure is not so likely to affect the wood as the interface between the wood and the plate. if the plates have moved out of direct and solid contact with the plane of the wood, there is a loss of capacity. for each 1/16" separation, the capacity goes down by about 25 percent, unless supplemental nailing has been done. |
