constraints
how can i constrain the yellow piece so that it just touches the grey shaft? (besides the distance mate optiom)
i tried tangent, but it is not working.
i am using '06.

try using a distance mate to the shaft's temporary axis.
if you had a plane on the edge of the yellow piece where you want it tangent it should work. i believe the tangent only works with faces and it looks like you have just an edge.
wouldn't you want the set screw to lock onto the flat in the shaft?

you can create (or show existing if available) sketch geometry and mate to that.
or you could create reference geometry and mate to that.
there are probably 50 different ways you could do this to either of the parts using the above strategy.

cbl,
he's probably has a square key in that location that's keying another mating part like an impeller and the set screw locks it in place from slopping around (tolernce stack-up's).

you should be able to mate the edge around the cup on the set screw to the plane of the motor shaft using the distance mate......but you wanted to do it a diffrent way???
i dont see how you would be able to do this without creating some additional planes that probably wouldnt be needed for anything other than mating.  seems like that would be a waste
there used to be an option in the interference detection function which would allow a part to be moved until it touched another part. anyone know where it is hiding now ... or if it has been deleted?

[sigh] ... i'm getting old, my mind is going. please ignore my last post.
the move component function has collision detection and stop at collision options. a part can be dragged until it contacts another part. the part can then be fixed in place. no extra planes, sketches or mates are required.
