inventor api
i conceed that posting an autodesk inventor api question in the solidworks api forum is a little unusual, but...
has anyone worked with the inventor api? i don't own a copy of inventor and don't plan to. as you may be aware, the solidworks document manager api does not require solidworks to be installed, etc...this is great if you want to make a simple file mgmt related app without having to fire up solidworks in the background.
my research thus far indicates to me that one must have inventor or "inventor view" installed on a machine in order to use the inventor "apprentice" api.
does anyone have any experience with this?
i think the sw doc mgr api is pretty handy...props to solidworks for making that available...
thanks
barry
i'd done inventor api for several yrs
you don't need inventor installed on your computer to write some standalone applications using apprenticeserver. all you need is to download inventorview which includes the apprenticeserver from autodesk website - its free.
i'm just wondering why you'd want to do this? without any knowlege of inventor, you will have a tought time doing this? and the most inportant thing is, without inventor, your standatlone programs (apprenticeserver) will be useless.

thanks for the reply...
i have a concept for an application that does not involve the manipulation, etc. of inventor geometry specifically...just maybe a thumbnail view plus file attributes, relations, etc. i think at least some of this info is obtainable using the inventor apprentice api.
but if i were to run such a (web) application on a 3rd party hosted server, the hoster would certainly not let me install inventor view on their server...so i guess i'd need my own dedicated server, etc.
with the solidworks doc mgr api, i don't need to have solidworks installed in order to call its methods...
thanks for the input
