acceptable alternate for parts list
i know some of you have dealt with this before. you create an assembly drawing with the parts list appear on it and have 10 items on the assembly drawing. the problem is on line item 1 you have to use a blue widget to deliver to one customer or you can use the acceptable alternative, which is a red widget to deliver to another customer, which is all so line item one. how would this be called out in a parts list on an assembly drawing?

you'd have separate qty columns for the different configurations. the different configigurations would be given different - numbers.
12345-1 would have the blue widget
12345-2 would have the red widget
the - numbers should not be confused with revisions.

as kenat has said, the 12345-2 assembly calls out quantity of 1, item 11 red widget, and quantity 0 (blank) item 1 blue widget.

thanks for the reply. however, in my case they are two completly different sub-assemblies, called fiber head assembly, with differnt numbers, that will be reporting on an upper level assembly drawing called scan assembly. we have two different versions of the fiber head assembly. however each one has its own assembly number, and they don't follow the same form fit or function. if a customer want one fiber head assembly over the other we are instructed to build it as so. however, the scan assembly drawings need to call and show both on the drawing.
item 1, 12345-1, blue widget, qty "1"
12345-2, red widget, qty "alt"

so, you have the different - numbers for your scan assembly.
scan assembly 123456-1 has quantities for items 1-10 and zero for item 11.
scan assembly 132456-2 has qty zero for item 1 and quantities for 2-11
(where item 1 is fiber head assy mk1 and item 11 is fiber head assy mk2)
you'd probably create most of your views for -1 however, if the alternate head is significantly different you may want to add a view showing this, you'd have to show the balloon somehow anyway.
maybe someone who's done tabulated drawings more could help please.

kenat's proceedure is the one that i use, and have seen used sucessfully for years. i just wish my cad software could handle it without resorting to manually editing the pl.

or, you might consider using a flagnote in the parts list for the line item that contained the blue widget, indicating that the red widget is an acceptable alternate for the blue widget. the assy dash number would still be the same.
ok lets get this cleared up.
are we talking about "you can use either the blue widget or the red widget and the end assy is effectively equivalent" as the thread title would suggest or...
are you saying that version 1 of the assy uses a red widget while version 2 uses a blue one. the end result is effectively 2 different assemblies/part numbers that are not interchangeable. to me this is what the text your post and reply suggests and what i worded my response to.

okay i'll try my best to help clear this up.
i have an assembly drawing called a scan assembly. with in this assembly is a sub-assembly called a fiber head. there are two different fiber head sub-assemblies. each fiber head assembly is a completely different design and assigned differnent assembly numbers. for example one fiber head assembly is numbered 12345 and the other is number 54321. again they are two completely different assemblies, the are called out on the scan assembly
the issue is when we are building up a scan assembly, we have a choice of using only one of the fiber head assembies either fiber head assebly 12345 or 54321.
my dilemma is we need to call out both fiber head assemblies 12345 and 54321 on the scan assembly parts list which is on the drawing. so my question is what is the best way of doing this on the parts list and illustrating this on the drawing?

if i may jump in, you in effect have 2 scan assemblies. one is built using fiber head 12345 and the other using fiber head 54321. this dual path continues as far up the assembly tree as long as form, fit, function, customer requirement, etc. remain unique for each "flavor". for us, this generally continues all the way up to the top level finished/packaged product. if you do reach a point of convergence, then you can look at doing what ctopher suggested by showing one option with the quantity "alt". the downside is if you have a computerized material planning system, it won't know how to handle the option and without manual intervention, will keep calling for the primary version.
my recommendation is to show your dual parts listing by "tab adding" a second quantity column for the additional models.
