proper temperature for inspection. where? why?
i have an inspection question.  wherever i have worked they always say that the part, surface to inspect on, and the gaging equipment must all be between 68-72 degrees f.
where is this officially stated?
does anyone have experience with heat charts/graphs to machine and inspect parts in a 70-80 degree building, but also pass inspection once in the 68 degree cmm room?
thanks,
asme y14.5-1994, section 1.4 fundamental rules, paragraph (k)
"unless otherwise specified, all dimensions are applicable at 20c (68f).  compensation may be made for measurments made at other temperatures."
"art without engineering is dreaming; engineering without art is calculating."
also see asme b89.6.2-1973 (reaffirmed 2003), "temperature and humidity environment for dimensional measurement".  this standard has a lot of good information on tempature and humidity compensation in measurements, coefficient of expansion ratios, thermal conductivity, etc.  all good things that an inspection shop should know and follow.

gdtguy - is correct with that asme b89.6.2 is a must have specification for setting up company qa standards.  we have parts that are machined from unobtainium that require special inspection processes.  a  for you
