about post installed in concrete
i was trying to determine if a post is installed in concrete , what things i should consider in my design..
1) pull out strenght..
could you help me find the code requirements..
thanks in advance
find a job or post a job opening
check out appendix d in your jurisdiction's aci code.

thanks rc for the information,
so, i should design the post as it is an anchor/ bolt...
if my post is very close to the edge of concrete.. is there any min requirement that my post will not breakout the concrete at the edge..
had a 2nd question: is there any requirement for base plate if i want to design using a base plate and anchors
appendix d was implemented in the aci 318-05 code. it is exactly what you are looking for with regard to designing for breakout strength of post-installed anchors for edge distance, spacing, etc.
2nd question - you can look at aisc design guide #1 - baseplate design - there are a few examples which will walk you through using this similar design methods for baseplate and anchor design.

thanks rc;
i do have aisc code book somewhere..but surely i donot own the design guide #1,
is there any other ref guide ..online or in code book..
..
for calculating the pull out strength using section d5.3:-
area of bearing doesnot consider the post depth..for anchors it might work ..but for post?
rc:-
while designing the post as anchor, i donot have any pojection of my post at end of concrete...will it not affect my pull out strength..
and since my post is smooth , what precaution should i take too...
attach a stiff horizontal
but my design is for precast concrete...
we have to drill hole in concrete to required strength and then.. install the post..(rectangle or square)
so i needed to cal the required embedment in concrete and required edge distance...
can post a sketch of what you are trying to do? is this a wall or double tee or something?
assume if you want to construct a post on stair case..
what is the min edge distance required and min embedment required..so that shear and tension failure is avoided
staed79, the criteria can change, depending on the load. if you have post and its heavily loaded, and also inducing a moment, it can change the design
