section 1.10.1 states "deflection of beams and lintels due to dl plus ll shall not exceed l/600 nor .3 in when providing vertical support to masonry designed in accordance with section 2.2 or chapter 5."
so in a nut shell.. if masonry has been unreinforced or empirically designed then i don't have to follow the deflection criteria specified above?
i've always gone around and around with the strict deflection criteria for masonry.
i have a steel beam spanning approx. 32 feet supporting vertically rein. masonry. also providing duro-wal every other course.
thanks
my take on section 1.10.1:
if the masonry is "reinforced", you don't need to meet the deflection criteria given in 1.10.1.
if the masonry is "unreinforced", i.e., it was designed according to section 2.2 or chapter 5, then you do.
i believe that many engineers meet the deflection criteria in either case. |
