adhesive anchors in concrete - what's the current situation?
hello all,
this is a link to see the most current icc approvals for "concrete anchoring":
searching this list, i find only one adhesive product with a current approval. (i'm not trying to advertise for anyone, so i'll only say that it's near the bottom of the page)
is it really true that there is only one adhesive anchor product that has a current icc approval for attachment to cast-in-place concrete?
(for what it's worth, there were 22 such products on icc's list one year ago. - i know that is due to repercussions from the boston big dig collapse, but really, just one product?)
thanks for any thoughts you have to offer.

i found one more.  it is on the "metal fastening" page here:
i would not say the current list is due to the big dig issues entirely.
the current standards of aci-318 for anchorage to concrete have changed in approach in some ways from the methods of the past in an attempt to ensure reliable performance of concrete anchors during seismic events. the initial testing and procedural guidlines were based on cast in and mechanical fasteners, with adhesive means following as testing programs and applications allow.
many existing fasteners, machanical and adhesive, used in the past are not acceptable when used in crack concrete. as such, new products and procedures are being developed to meet the new criteria.
fun stuff.
hope it helps.

i just ran into this problem the other day.  the only approved epoxy adhesive as of this writing is the hilti-hit-re 500-sd.  this epoxy meets the intent of ibc 2006 for post installed anchors and the intent of aci appendix d.
simpson is rushing to get theirs approved.  powers is in the same boat.
it has been evaluated in accordance with icc-es acceptance criteria ac308 and has been issued icc-esr-2322.
you can go to us.hilti.com and download the esr-2322.
as far as mechanical anchors:
hilti has an undercut anchor that meets the ibc requirements but it is only in metric and requires that the contractor use metric stop bits...it is called hda undercut anchor.
simpson has the strong-bolt
powers has nothing yet.
you would be correct, searching all the icc reports the following are approved for cracked concrete:
hilti kb tz
hilti hsl-3 (metric)
hilti hda (metric)
hilti re 500 sd
simpson strong bolt
redhead tru-bolt + (although only 1/2" diameter)
the other linked adhesive is only approved for the ubc.
the adhesive change occured on january 1st, 2008.  the mechanical anchor change occured on january 1st, 2007.
the attached letter explains the changes.
if a vendor claims to meet the ibc, they can submit independent test reports showing compliance.  icc-es is costly and not all manufacturer's of building products want to do more than the independent test.  having an evaluative services report on file makes it eaasier to get approved by most building departments.

be careful following manufacturer's links to reports.  the reports may not be current or valid.
excellent point.  with the current 3 year code change cycle, manufacturer's have to resubmit to icc-es each cycle.
