aisi web crippling question
how should one define the web crippling bearing length, n, for a roof panel resting on a member with curved edges? for example, a hss or a cold-formed zee or cee shape. are these equations precise enough to warrant subtracting the curved portions, leaving the flat hss or zee dimension as "n," or is this too precise to be warranted?
any advice would be greatly appreciated. the obvious answer is to go on the safe side, but that's, well, obvious. is there a deeper, better answer?

is the bearing curved or the member that you are checking?
if the bearing is curved, like a joist bearing on top of an hss tube, i would use the flat part of the tube.  if you are using a program i'd start with the full hss dimension and see how close you are to capacity.  if it's pretty close then i'd go back and make sure by using only the flat part.
is that what you meant?
