anchor bolts in piers with shear & tension
there are several methods available to calculate the shear & pullout tension strength of the anchor bolts. in lieu of aci 318-02 requirements, is it ok to still use the 1992 pci guide which is not mentioned in ibc2003 or ibc2000? thank you.
technically (and in a nit-picking way) you must follow the governing adopted code that applies to your particular construction. so if the ibc 2000 is the adopted code, and it doesn't point to the pci method, but only to the aci then you are expected to use that method as a minimum. the pci code may require deeper embedments, and larger diameters fo the same load so you can certainly use it if it increases the design. but you have to check the aci anyway to see if it does indeed exceed it.
sometimes codes have small sections that say something to the effect of "...or other rational method". in this case, i would agree that the pci could then be considered.
don't forget also to check shear-tension interaction in accordance with asce 8-02.
