appendix a section a3.5
folks,
in aci 318-02 appendix a, section a3.5, what is meant by "compression reinforcement shall be properly anchored".
check out our whitepaper library.
proper anchorage means that the steel needs to be developed sufficiently at the strut/node interface (at each end) to develop f's. this can be by straight development length, hooks, or some mechanical means. chapter 17 of the pca notes discusses this a bit.
thanks, i have a follow up question as well.
it appears that reinforcement could be used to increase the compressive strength of a strut.
however, the strength of a node is based entirely on the concrete failing in compression. the width of the nodal zone is equal to the width of the strut. so how does one benefit from using reinforcing in the strut when the design is controlled by the strength of the nodal zone.
