base plate w/ offset
i am designing a base plate in which the column is not located at the center of the plate.  please verify that this is a good approach:
design the base plate like the column is located at center with induced moment due to offset.
thanks in advance
check out our whitepaper library.
lutein,
although the method you mentioned may work, you still have to check that the maximum bearing pressure on the concrete does not exceed the allowable.
i would resolve that problem in a different way:
1)  establish the dimensions of the base plate to keep the maximum bearing pressure on the concrete within the allowable.   (i understand the distance from the center of the column to one or two sides of the base plate is constrained to certain maximum dimension)
2)   calculate the dimensions "m" and "n" (ref: manual of steel construction, page 3-102).   notice that "m" and/or "n" on one side will be larger than on the opposite side because the eccentricity of the column.
3)   calculate the moments in the base plate based on the largest dimension "m" or "n" and the actual bearing pressure on the corresponding side of the base plate.
