coat/wrap pt lumber in concrete?
just wondering if it is helpful to wrap or tar pressure treated lumber when setting them as posts in a concrete or gravel base? i had heard someone say to place a tar shingle between pt lumber and concrete blocks on a shed foundation to prevent moisture wicking and revent accelerated decay.
for typical pt lumber, you should isolate from concrete if embedded. concrete has a tremendous drying effect on lumber, even pt. use an asphaltic mastic, not paper or shingles.
i am interested to hear what others think on this topic.
generally when i use treated columns, its because they are embedded in concrete. i'm not familiar with coating the columns with mastic or other materials.
my experience with untreated wood columns with their base below the floor slab, is that coating the columns with mastic is not very effected against long term column deterioration. |
