connection to brick
i need to find a fastener that can go intp a hollow brick and withstand about 400 lbs. of tension.  i looked at hilti anchors and what they have i can't use because i have another fastener about 3" away.  if i have to space the fasteners further i will but i would rather not.
generally speaking we usually place expansion anchors into the mortar bed when fastening to brick. typically for this application we use drop in type anchors 3/8" in diameter.
there are plenty of other anchors that could be used including through bolts with a metal backing plate.
spacing requirements generally result in reduced capacities for closely spaced anchors.
use anchors to masonry ubc 94 2108.1 and its table 21d as guide. has some erratas, at least in my edition. you can use a mathcad sheet i made for the design. some other data than you provide is required for a proper check, distance to edge, for example.
where fire is not a concern, and sometimes even if it is, adhesive anchors may be a solution. look then for the adhesive anchors design manual of powers as a pdf document.
how about using a threaded rod as a thru-bolt completely through the masonry wall?  if you use a large washer (like 3" diam or plate washer 4" square)it helps to distribute the load.  of course, it also depends on whether you can leave the assembly exposed to view or not.  you do have to calculate the size of the rod etc., but i've used it many times.
