i have a light hss 'a' type frame to be used for supporting scaffold pipe.  the vertical members are small hss 3x2 elements and the cross members are of a similar ilk.
rather than cutting the cross members at the vertical elements and welding them to the faces, i'm thinking of simply lapping them and welding along the corners of the tube.
i can accommodate the eccentricities and and torsion from the 'distortion' of the cross members and the eccentric welding.  i'm considering only using 1/2 the strength of the cross members since any load on the far edge will cause the load to be transferred to the supported edge.  i'm also considering using the eccentricity from the face of the vertical support to the centreline.
has anyone come across this before, any papers, and any suggestions.
thanks, dik
