curved column
hi,
has anyone designed a curved column here?
in my new building project i need to design some curved columns of 700*300 mm² dimension. the column length is 12.6m . they support only a cantilevered part of the roof and are curved along their height.
i also wonder if some sort of bracing is required among them.
any suggestion, example would be helpful.
thanks in advnce,
benjaman
can you better specify the meaning of curved? how much is the offset at mid length (or at the end if they are curved like a cantilever) from the straight shape?
please also specify the loads and self weight (or material).
prex
thanks prex,
the offset of the curve is 1 m at mid height and 2.4 m at the bottom.
ites carrying 6.95 m of cantilever (i mean cantilever from the last support) concrete roof.
benjaman
you mean like an hour glass shape?
never, but never question engineer's judgement
is it kind of like the bottom left hand corner of a circle?
i assume by your description that they are concrete columns so they are fixed at the base.
if your roof is braced then there is no lateral load and the linear moment at the base will be the vertical load times the eccentricity. you will also have a component of shear from the vertical load.
use the multipliers in the code to get the design moment.

i suggest that for the service load limit you should not allow any cracking. as these cracks will be visible by the nacked eye.
coengineer,
it is indeed an hour glass shape.............
csd72,
they are fixed at the base............i also thought this way.........thanks.

is the cl of the column curved, or only the outside surface ? |
