design of mitered beams
i have a condition where i need to use a reversed mitered steel beam and didn't know if there were any special design criteria or conditions i should take into account for that would be different from designing a normal steel beam.
what is a reversed mitered steel beam?

the beam is shaped like a v so rather then the miter being at a high point it is at the low point of the roof.
i guess you would treat it like a single angle in flexure, bent around its weak principal axis.  each leg of the beam would be subject to lateral buckling because they are in the compression zone.

so as i read it, this is a rafter which goes continuously through a valley rather than over a ridge.  you need to develop the flanges in the same way.  one way is to use a vertical splice plate, weld both sides to the plate.  or you could provide end plates on both pieces with a bolted connection.
