design wind speed on long island, bahamas
does anyone know the design wind speed on long island in the bahamas?  i've googled, searched the bahamas government website, and called, all to no avail.

see attached from pan american health organization, based on asce 7 for carribean islands (technically, long island is not in the carribean islands, but the bahamas are in this article)  in particular, see fig. 3.2....
at least this give you a defensible reference, though you might want to err on the conservative side...for instance long island is partly at the 130 mph isotach, so 140 or 150 would be appropriate.
i tried to upload my copy of the pdf file, but it wouldn't take it so i'm providing a link for you to download the file...good luck.
ron, that's excellent!  cheers!
paraphrased from the bahamas building code:
wind load [section 2009]
the provisions of asce7-02 shall be followed with the following modifications:
a) the design wind speed for all locations is 150 mph.
b) all buildings shall be considered to be at the hurricane coastline for purposes of application of the importance factor.
c) buildings in the coastal building zone shall be considered to be in exposure category d.  the "coastal building zone" is defined as "the land from the mean high water line to a line 1500'-0" landwards or the entire island in question, whichever is less."
d) all buildings not in the coastal building zone shall be considered to be in exposure category c.
e) a 1/3 stress increase is permitted for any load combination that includes wind.  this includes the d + w case unlike most current us codes.  (section 2009.3)

ajh1..even better!
