drift of shear wall panel
i was ask to calculate the drift of shear wall panel which i could not find it in the book or internet. any one know how? please show me . thanks.
assume a fixed beam with the shear load at the top of the wall. i would do this by hand to ensure that the shear deformation is being accounted for. i am not sure if programs like enercalc account for shear deformations or flexural deflections only. either way, this should be well documented in any structural analysis book.
my personal favorite procedure would be castigliano's method. i always enjoyed doing that by hand.
you did not mention what material or code that you are using but for blocked wood structural panel shear wall you might look in ibc 2000, 2305.3.2.
i hope this helps!
hi,
you definitly should look in the breyer "design of wood structures". the deflection of a sherawall basically depends on :
chord bending
shear
nail slip
anchorage slip
with this four terms you could calculate the deflection of a shearwall. if you´re using the ubc 97 you have to calculate the drift at strengh level and then compare it with the maximum inelastic displacemnt.
i hope that this could be helpful.
