flexural bending of steel angle section
i am wondering how to determine what the moment resistance is of a l2x2x3/16 with one leg horizontal, in compression, and laterally restrained, with the other leg vertical. i have a uniformly distributed load along a simply supported span. what particular considerations are there with an unsymmetrical section as this?
are you a student??
dun dun dun, you better have not caught 40818 in a bad mood or he is going to blast ya in this thread (as he has on one of my threads a while ago)
aaro,
best to talk to your supervising pe about this one.

aaro,
i think that your question does have a merit. if an angle is in bending, the resultant tension and compression forces will not act in the same line. which may mess up the stress distribution a little bit.
if your angle has adequate bracing, i think using .6*fy will be more appropriate.
look in the aisc manual (9th or 13th edition). it is fully covered.

it is on page 5-311 in the green book and page 16.1-57 in the 13th edition manual |
