help with type and cost of metal pipes, please
can anybody tell me what metal pipe i must use if it must withstand 2500 kpa of pressure and -250 to 1000 degrees c? i need to purchase two pipes: one pipe with dimensions 4m long, 2m inner diam and 0.005m thick cost the other pipe of dimensions 6m long, 2m wide and 0.005m thick. where may i purchase such pipes from? how much would they be? also, how often do they need to be replaced due to wear and tear? thanks for your help!
hi biowoman,
these are not off the shelf items.i think even titanium would not be able to withstand the temperature and pressure regime you want to subject the pipe to.
are there operational reasons why the wall thickness should be 5mm? if not thick steel pipe with cooling coils to keep the temp ok might be a solution.
hi biowoman,
i agree with letrab.
doing some quick calculations the end pressure on the 2m diameter pipe is 785 tonnes at 2500kn/m2 (25 bar), so the design of the pipe needs some serious thought even without the temperature changes. what sort of wear and tear will it experience or is it fatigue? i also believe that 5mm wall thickness is far too small unless it has backing, say a composite pipe. it partly depends on what is going to be inside the pipe.
