multi story wood construction
for those of you who do multi-story wood framed construction, i have a question:
when using pre-engineered wood floor trusses bearing on a 2x6 exterior stud wall, do you use a solid band board the same depth as the truss to transfer the diaphragm loads into the shearwall? or do you use solid blocking between trusses? or a ribbon board provided by the truss manufacturer? any other methods?
thanks,
ice
i generally use a 1" thick osb rim board.
alternatively, if the trusses extend all the way to the outside face of the wall, the exterior osb sheathing can be nailed to the ends of the trusses. with this method, at the end walls, where the trusses are parallel to the exterior wall, a "ladder" truss is used. again, the exterior sheathing is nailed to the ladder truss.

agree with dave regarding the rim board, try to get it from the same manufacturer so the height matches.
watch the concentrated loads on these, you may need to add additional short stubs of 2x4 under double and triple studs to transfer the load. |
